This project is a visual study of a phenomenon term “uniform” in a social and cultural aspect based on the most essential and common household item – a chair. There are 3 stories to tell, one by each chair. The study shows the possibility of washing away any personal features by using some kind of a uniform. The result of this observation is a beautiful yet silent composition of 3 perfect shapes – The Silent Crowd.
Is it possible to unite different individuals and communities by unifying rules, norms of behavior, visual signs?
Is it possible to coexist side by side while maintaining one's identity or should it be concealed by a uniform?
We can divide society into groups according to a visual image. This visual marker allows us to define their class affiliation, their job and sometimes to infer their personal qualities, guided by a well-known stereotype - after all, the uniform was invented to make it easier to navigate. But is this really so? Is the uniform so important or does the personal qualities actually shape the essence of each person?
Used chairs, unbleached cotton, wool, padding polyester. Various dimensions.
